After Melanie nearly gave me a heart attack by causing me to think we were going to deliver this baby in the car, Carson Jeffrey was born on Thursday, October 16, 2008. He was 7 pounds 6 ounces and a towering 22 inches tall. He is great and Melanie is doing amazingly well. Really, she looks great and is recovering nicely.
For those who want to read how it went down, here is the chain of events:
2:30am- jeff wakes up because he can hear Melanie's painful groaning and mumblings
2:48am-jeff has now taught melanie that those really painful spurts of extreme discomfort in the lower torso area are called contractions, not just baby moving around. I also calmly informed her that when they're only two minutes apart, that means you should be in the hospital by now. Anyway, at 2:48 I call the neighbor to come over.
3:07am-we're now standing at the elevator waiting for the dang doors to open up. I kid you not when I say I was sweating (literally) and looking around to see what we would do if he came before the stupid elevator opened.
3:09-ish-We're now coming out of the staff elevator with the security guard because the normal elevator never came. mel is also screaming at the top of her lungs "somebody help me! I need help".
3:10-ish- We now have about 8 nurses scrambling around the bed preparing to deliver the baby without a doctor, resident, midwife or anyone else who regularly delivers babies
3:14am-"I need to push. He needs to come out". Sure enough, he came flying out like bullet. I think the on-call doctor was still asleep at his house.
How many of you can say you've gone from being sound asleep in the comforts of your own bed to holding your newborn son in 48 minutes? Nice work Mel!
Famous quote of the night: "I don't know if you are planning on having any more children, but if you are, you had better come get to the hospital the second you feel anything! Otherwise, you'll (looking at me) be using a shoestring to tie off the cord." - Nurse unknown
